2020 - The Year of Blackmoor - 50th Anniversary - Day One Hundred and Twenty-Eight

Celebrating 2020 - The Year of Blackmoor - 50th Anniversary of Blackmoor and of Role-Playing!

Today is Part 71 of my series on OD&D, with The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures Vol. 3.

**For those coming in, in the middle of this series I am giving you my take on OD&D during my first exposure starting in Sept of 1975. For this first part it is just the first three books of the original woodgrain box set and prior to obtaining the Greyhawk, Blackmoor and later Supplements.**

Men-At-Arms:

Of course, if you have other playable races in your game you can also use them if you so desire. And nothing prevent various monster races from also being used.

These tables can be extended in whatever ways is needed so that they work for your campaign. Giants are neutral (BtB) and as house ruled some are neutral or Lawful. They are much in demand for many things including construction projects.

Another method is to visit the nearest city and go through the taverns hiring bards to spread the word. This is one place that a well-greased palm plays a beautiful tune.

Itinerant Bards IMC (NPCs) are full of stories, rumors and news. They along with caravans are one of the prime ways that news travels, leavened well with rumors of dubious accuracy. But bards are often hired to spread certain news, rumors, and other things.

I do put a cap on this, otherwise really high level adventurers could never afford to come back to town. Of course for my game it is in Silver instead of Gold.

IMC it is considered quite wise not to build within an ancient dragons territory, although depending on the dragon, it can sometimes be good to build within 25 miles of the edge of the domain of some (but by no means all) dragons. Now you have a well-protected flank.

IMC you roll 1d4+4 for the number of villages.initial villages in this new wilderness domain. Remember that these villagers are recruited similar to Specialists. They (and the farmers that surround the villages) are recruited with the promise of land and protection from monsters and other predators. Over time the number of villages can grow throughout the 1200+ Square miles of a domain.

These are just a few of the investments that a wise "baron" may make within his domain. Yes, you may have noticed that being located on a sizable body of water or on a navigatable river leading to one falls under "Location, location, location."

Over time up to four villages may grow into well-established towns. All manner of craftsmen will flock to new areas lacking competition. Depending on the natural resources of your domain steady trade can be developed by land and by sea. Trading ships and merchant caravans will visit you on a regular basis to trade for your wares.

Tomorrow - the angry villager!
